    Description

You're bidding on a nice, antique pair of bookends - number-marked 9741, which suggests manufactured by the Judd Manufacturing Co., one of America's finest manufacturers of cast iron and bronze decorative metalware from about 1910 into the 1930s. This is a cool, figural set that still retains its bottom felting and labels - which indicate the set is called "The Student". It depicts a studious man with a sort of comically tall hat, seated on a bench, reading a book - flanked by book stacks and under a decorative arbor. The gingerbread-style arbor has a very Art Nouveau period style, and the figure, to me, is reminiscent on Maxfield Parrish's illustration work of the period.
Very nice condition, retaining its original green applied finish with bronze accent on the figure and the books. Solid and heavy at 3 1/4 lbs each. Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
