ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHY!
A healthy and happy Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard, as he played in a hotel swimming pool the afternoon of a performance at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, Florida, September 9th, 1981. Not yet 18 years old, Allen was on tour in support of Def Leppard’s breakthrough album “High N Dry” (opening for Ozzy Osbourne). Before the show, the entire band lounged pool side enjoying the Florida sunshine, discussing their new found success and posing for photographs. These were, quite obviously, happier times for Allen, who - just over three years later - would nearly lose his life in an auto accident on New Year’s Eve, 1984. An accident that would cost him his left arm... and years of painful rehabilitation. Amazingly, the band stood by him and refused to replace the headstrong Allen, as he fought the near-impossible belief that he could return to his first love, drumming. As we all know.... he did just that, designing his own drum sets (with the use of modern technology) that would allow him to trigger actions with an intricate series of foot pedals that would substitute for his missing arm. A wonderful photo of the 17 year old Rick Allen - whose fortitude and determination would soon be challenged in ways he could never imagine.
