Description
Exceptional Gouda PZH Holland Charger, "Unica" Jo Smit Decorated, c. 1930sThis very fine and exceptional charger/wall plate was painted by Jacobus (Jo) Smit at the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) works in Gouda, Holland.
It's from the one-off, artist decorated "Unica" line, and the quality of the painting on this wall plate is simply astonishing.
The design features a very colorful, exquisitely detailed floral design, on a mottled gray ground, surrounded with the familiar Gouda wavy Art Nouveau border in mottled ochres and reds. The scalloped edge of the plate is lined in ochre.
The decoration and level of detail are unusually fine on this example.
Dimensions: 16" in diameter x 2-1/4" high; the base is 8" in diameter.
This is in excellent original condition, with no chips, cracks or other damage. It is totally uncrazed.
Marked on the bottom with the Gouda "little house" and "5110/40 / Unica / Kon. Plateelbakkerij / Zuid-Holland/ Gouda". The initials "JS." (Jo Smit) appear at the bottom of the mark. There are two old paper labels affixed to the back; probably from a collector or museum cataloging system.
This is undated--that I can determine--but was most likely made sometime in the 1930s (from the marks and the overall appearance). There is one obscure mark to the right of the house mark that could possibly be an upside down 1949 mark. This looks much earlier than that to me, though.
Note: I'm listing four Gouda wall plates from my collection (shown in the last two photos). Please see my "Other Items" for the other pieces.
