Description
1862 Pope Pius IX 26 Nagasaki Japanese Martyrs Medal Very RAREThis is a silver medal measuring about 51mm and weighing 61.5g. Although difficult to see from the photos, this medal has beautiful, light gun-blue-metal toning throughout over semi-proof-like fields with minor cabinet friction. The medal is much more attractive in person than these photos show.
This historically important medal was struck to commemorate the crucifixion of 26 Japanese Catholics in 1597 at Nagasaki. I believe the mintage was a mere 50 pieces. I contacted the "Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum" in Nagasaki recently and was informed they did not own this rarity in their collection. Note: that museum was built in 1962 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this rare medal.
This silver medal is perhaps the most important, historical item of the Japanese Catholics. Highly sought and desirable! The last photo shows the proposed design dated 1862 that was never adopted (for illustration only and not a part of sale)
